"Australia plans to
endorse CD-copying kiosks in a controversial world-first plan that
legalizes music piracy. The Australian Mechanical Copyright Owners
Society [AMCOS] will allow an Adelaide-based business to operate
CD-pirating kiosks nationwide for a modest royalty payment. The
coin-operated kiosks could open in shopping malls, supermarkets or
record stores from September and charge $5 for each CD 'burn'. Some
independent operators have already installed copying machines in
convenience stores, but their legality has not been tested. Read
the rest of the story

Netflix is one of the
few dot-coms out there who has really become successful providing a
DVD rental service. The company has over 600,000 subscribers
since they started and are growing fast. Their service is
actually really cool for the many movie buffs out there. You pay
$20 US per month to rent DVD that arrive by mail, but it's only for US
residents. If you're interested in the success of Netflix, take
a look at this
Salon.com article!

A
slashdot.com poster had an excellent comment: "'I say to you that
the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as
the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone.' Jack Valenti said
this in 1982 in testimony to the House of Representatives on why the
VCR should be illegal. He also called the VCR an "avalanche" and a
"tidal wave", and said it would make the film industry "bleed and
bleed and hemorrhage". This speech is an important part of history,
yet until today it had never been published on-line in its entirety.
Valenti's testimony
was published today by
Cryptome.
It's essential background reading if you want to see just how little
the MPAA's arguments have changed in two decades." Compare to the
Analog
Hole document and they're virtually identical (except Valenti was
playing on anti-Japanese sentiment then, and today it's anti-pirate
sentiment). Of course, the MPAA was unsuccessful in plugging the "VCR
Hole" - insufficient lobbying and clueful judges stopped them. The
MPAA successfully adapted to the changing times and today sells about
70 million cassettes for rentals and 600 million cassettes for home
viewing every year (both numbers are on the decline due to the rise of
DVD)."

The developers of Winamp
have given reasons why users should not use the WMA or MP3 Pro file
formats, rather, they suggest the MP3 (LAME) format or the open source
OGG Vorbis format due to the licensing fees, quality, and overall
ability to be used on many different Operating Systems. Take a
look at the
full article here.

Canadians may find
themselves paying a huge levy on any type of storage media such as
blank CDs, compact flash memory cards, DVD discs and even MP3 players
among others. The proposed tax would set customer back 59 cents
(CDN$) for each blank CD-R! For more on this issue, read the
entire article from Wired.com.

Lately, I've really
gotten hooked on
John Mayer,
a great new music artist from Atlanta, GA. My favourite song is
"My Stupid Mouth" from his recent release "Room for Squares".
This guy has some great lyrics and a style like Dave Matthews Band.
Check out his
website for more details.
